Do you live close to Bentleigh and need help with Deck Restoration?
Do you have a decking that looks something like this???
Wheather you want to enjoy your outdoor area or want to make it more appealling for potential buyers…
With a little bit of work and a lot of love… we can get it back to this.
But what will it take to restore your decking back to its former glory?
Let’s dig in together and find out…
When it comes to deck restoration in Melbourne it’s really not that complicated if you know what to look for.
In Melbourne, there are really only 4 different deck restoration options, and which one you choose depends on the condition of your decking.
- Pressure wash and Deck Oiling or Stain:
This is the best option when your deck is due for maintenance but it’s only been a year or two since your last re-seal. The boards are in good condition and the current coating is not patchy or peeling.
2. Chemical clean, pressure cleaning and Deck Staining:
This is your option when it’s been a couple of years since your last deck rejuvenation, and the stain is patchy and wearing off in sections.
This is also a good option when your decking has mould and stains.
3. Deck sanding, cleaning and oiling:
You know you need this option when the current coating is flaking and peeling. This usually means that an acrylic coating has been used. The only way to treat this is to sand off the old coating.
Sanding is also the best option after you’ve tested a section of decking with a chemical clean but you haven’t been happy with the results.
4. Decking board replacement – Deck Repairs:
If it been a few years since your last deck restoration, you’ll probably notice the boards are starting to split or are rotting and breaking away. In this case, you’ll need to replace any boards that can’t be sanded back.
Most times, you’ll only need to replace a few boards, but in some cases you’ll be better off replacing all of them.
So if you have a decking that needs to be restored, here’s what you need to do…
You need to work out which treatment will be best for your decking.
Use the examples from above to assess the condition of your decking and use this checklist below.
1. Start by looking for any soft, rotten decking boards – (Replace boards)
2. Look for surface cracks and splits then make sure they haven’t gone right through the board- (You need deck sanding)
3. Check the condition of the current surface coating: is it patchy – (Chemical cleaning) or is it flaking? – (You need to sand that off)
4. Is there no coating currently on the decking? – (Pressure cleaning and oil or stain)
5. Is there mould and stains? – (Sand deck)
This is exactly what I do when I’m deciding on the best plan of attack for a decking in need of restoration.
I call it the “Deck Restoration Audit”
Let me show you some examples:
This deck had a flaking coating that couldn’t be cleaned off so we sanded it back then applied a decking oil and stain
This decking had boards that were rotten and starting to split. The only option was to replace the decking boards
This decking had no coating and had turned a grey colour but was still in great condition. All we needed to do was to pressure wash then coat with decking oil
This is an example of a deck sanding. This one had extreme mould and stains. We had to sand it back and apply a decking oil.
