The first step is to understand the current condition of your deck… This is not a one-size-fits-all…
So… what condition is your deck currently in?
Do you have a deck that needs a Clean and Oil?
This is your best option when your deck doesn’t have a coating and has turned grey. Usually it’s been around a year or 2 since your last deck cleaning and there’s no signs of old oil coatings or mold…
When you start to clean a deck in this condition, you’ll notice as you clean it that the natural colour of the timber will start to show through.
When your decking is wet, it gives you a pretty good indication of what it would look like when you give it a coat of oil
If you like the way it looks, then a pressure clean and two coats of oil would be the right option for you…
Maybe you have a Deck in need of Sanding, Pressure Cleaning and Oiling…
This is what you’d choose when you have an acrylic coating on your decking and it’s starting to peel and flake…
This is also your best option if you’ve tested a section of your decking with cleaning chemicals but you’re not happy with the results…
Sometimes you’ll notice that your decking has what seems to be two coatings. The first coating is usually the old, weathered decking oil. This coat comes off really easy with a pressure clean.
Then you’ll notice that there’s a second coat which looks like a black dirty stain. This one can’t be cleaned off.
If you have a deck in this condition, it’ll be best to sand it back, scrub it down with a brightener, pressure clean it then give it two coats of decking oil…
Perhaps you have a Deck in need of a Chemical Scrub, Pressure Clean and Oil…
You’d choose this option when your deck stain is wearing off and is patchy in sections or there is mold covering your deck…
To be honest, I rarely use harsh stripping chemicals to restore a deck. Unless the decking is really small, the cost of the chemicals is way too expensive.
It’s usually better to sand your deck than to strip off with an expensive paint or chemical stripper.
You could have a Deck that needs to have Decking Boards replaced…
This is your best choice if you can’t remember when you last restored your deck and the decking boards are starting to split and rot away…
You’ll need decking repairs… board replacement… and a chemical clean before two coats of oil…
Whenever you replace decking boards it’s important to remember that you need to let them weather for a couple of months before you oil them.
You can skip the weathering process by stripping the boards with a chemical clean or power wash.
This is not the same expensive chemicals that you’d use for stripping the deck. These chemicals are much cheaper. But be careful… They can turn your boards dull and black…
Don’t forget the deck brightener whenever you restore a deck…
